President Donald Trump promoted a tweet from a Daily Beast columnist that repeated his claim Russian leader Vladimir Putin and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un are more mentally competent than Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. That tweet also mocked the president for fawning over tyrants.
“Trump claims that Putin and Kim Jong-un are more mentally fit than Biden,” wrote columnist Julia Davis. “Still fanboying for dictators.”
Seemingly seizing on the first half of the tweet, which insults his political rival, Trump responded in the affirmative.
“I didn’t know there would be even a question about this!” Trump wrote.
Trump, who has been criticized for his deference to Putin and Kim, reportedly said at a rally on Sunday that he thinks the world’s despotic dictators are smarter than the former vice president.
In 2018, Trump appeared to side with Putin during a meeting where he said he doesn’t “see any reason why” the consensus by U.S. intelligence agencies that Russia interfered in the 2016 election would be true after Putin allegedly denied those findings.
According to Bob Woodward’s new book “Rage,” Trump’s former director of national intelligence Dan Coats believed Putin had some sort of leverage over the U.S. president.
Coats also reportedly said Trump “doesn’t know the difference between the truth and a lie.”
Trump became the first U.S. president to visit North Korea in 2019, though his former national security adviser, John Bolton, said the president’s boasts of reducing the hermit kingdom’s nuclear ambitions have been overstated.
“The idea that we are somehow exerting maximum pressure on North Korea is just unfortunately not true,” Bolton wrote.
The president called Supreme Leader Kim “far beyond smart,” according to Woodward.
He also boasted to Woodward: “It’s funny, the relationships I have, the tougher and meaner they are, the better I get along with them.”
Trump, 74, has inarguably been tough on Biden, repeatedly insisting the 77-year-old statesman take a mental acuity test, as the president claimed he himself had done.
Biden brushed off that suggestion and wondered why the president underwent an examination that gauges mental competence.
Trump frequently refers to his opponent as “Sleepy Joe” on the campaign trail. He also said last week Biden was “stupid.”
A Monmouth poll last week indicating 52% of likely voters feel the former vice president possesses the mental acuity to run the nation, while only 47% feel that way about the incumbent. Fox News, which frequently echoes the president’s rhetoric, released similar findings Sunday.
