Japan's core consumer prices fell 0.4 percent in August from a year earlier amid the prolonged impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak, government data showed Friday.

Nationwide core consumer prices, excluding volatile fresh food items, dropped for the first time in three months, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.

The CPI index was flat on year in July.
