Week 4 Recap: Los Angeles Chargers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

For the fifth time in his career, Tom Brady overcame a 17-point deficit after the Los Angeles Chargers held a 24-7 lead over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers late in the second quarter. The Buccaneers went on to win, 38-31. This was his 222nd career win, giving him the most all-time for any player as he passes Adam Vinatieri.

Brady threw five touchdowns to five different receivers. This was his fifth career game with five touchdown passes. He finished 30-for-46 with 369 yards and tied Peyton Manning for the second-most games (seven) with 300 plus passing yards and five-plus touchdowns. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert also performed well, finishing 20-for-25 for 290 yards and three touchdowns. With a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter, Herbert was picked off by Carlton Davis.

With running back Leonard Fournette (ankle) not playing in this game, Ronald Jones II was used early and often. He finished with 20 carries for 111 rushing yards, adding six catches for 17 yards. Wide receiver Mike Evans stepped up in the absence of Chris Godwin, finishing with seven catches for 122 yards and a touchdown. Scotty Miller had five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown. Tight end O.J Howard had a touchdown catch but suffered a season-ending Achilles rupture in the process.

The Chargers struggled to run the ball against the Buccaneers’ stout front seven. They finished with just 46 total rushing yards. Running back Austin Ekeler was carted off the field early with a severe hamstring injury.

While the Chargers’ secondary struggled in the second half, they played well early on. Michael Davis had a pick-six in the first quarter.
