Mariah Carey believes it's been a lifelong quest to find her racial identity

Mariah Carey feels like it has taken her entire life to find where she fits in as a biracial woman.

The 50-year-old singer has struggled to come to terms with her identity as she felt like she wasn’t black enough but was bullied by white girls at school who called her the N-word.

She told The Guardian newspaper: “I can’t help that I’m ambiguous-looking and most people would assume that it’s been to my benefit, and maybe it has in some ways. But it’s also been a lifelong quest to feel like I belong to any specific group. It shouldn’t have to be such a freaking thing.”

What’s more, she struggled with her identity in her own home as her mother didn’t know how to care for her curly hair and envied the white women in shampoo adverts.

She added: “I am still obsessed with blowing hair, as evidenced by the wind machines employed in every photoshoot of me ever.”
