Week 5 Waiver Wire Adds/Drops

A quarter of the way through the season, there are many players in fantasy leagues that are showing that they will be either surprisingly reliable or unreliable for the rest of the season. Here are some Week 5 adds and drops to help you maneuver your fantasy league.

Adds:

Justin Herbert | QB, Los Angeles Chargers

The 21-year-old just went toe-to-toe with Tom Brady and the high-powered Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense. He’s the second quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 900 yards in his first three career starts. With bye weeks coming up for many quarterbacks, Herbert is the perfect plugin. He has the potential to be a weekly top-12 quarterback, so he has value beyond a bye week if your quarterback is struggling.

Justin Jackson | RB, Los Angeles Chargers

Another Chargers player cracks this list due to injury to his competition. Austin Ekeler is going to miss four-to-six weeks, so Jackson should split carries and pass-catching opportunities with rookie Joshua Kelley. Last season he was a great FLEX option over the last few weeks of the season, and he could see some value now in deeper leagues.

Brandon Aiyuk | WR, San Francisco 49ers

Yes, the second week he cracks the list. Aiyuk offers the 49ers a dynamic playmaker in an offense that is decimated by injuries. Whether it’s Jimmy Garappolo, C.J. Beathard, or Nick Mullens throwing him the football, he will continue growing and making plays. His role and usage rate have increased each week, and that trend will continue.

Tee Higgins | WR, Cincinnati Bengals

There are just so many great rookie wide receiver options this year. Higgins needs to be on that list. He and Joe Burrow have been creating chemistry since day one of camp, and with the decrease in effectiveness for A.J. Green, Higgins is stepping up. Tyler Boyd is the No. 1 wide receiver on the team, but Higgins is playing like a No. 2, and his targets should match that in the next week or so.

Drops:

Carson Wentz | QB, Philadelphia Eagles

Yes, you read that name right. Wentz will find ways to win some games for this injury-riddled offense. But, his numbers have not been impressive, and that won’t be getting much better anytime soon. There are other quarterbacks on the waiver wire that will be more productive in the short-term. If he happens to pick it up one week, he would likely still be available as he’s not a hot commodity that anyone wants to pick up right now.

Kenyan Drake | RB, Arizona Cardinals

Drake has always been inconsistent for fantasy purposes. This year, he’s averaging 3.8 yards per carry, and that number is declining. Against the Carolina Panthers, he only had 35 yards on 13 attempts. With Kyler Murray leading the team in rushing and Chase Edmonds seeing an increased workload, Drake could see his volume decrease dramatically.

Wayne Gallman | RB, New York Giants

When Saquon Barkley went down with an ACL injury, many expected Gallman to be the lead back. That hasn’t been the case as he only saw 15.2 percent of the running back snaps in Week 4. Dion Lewis and Devonta Freeman are the lead backs. Gallman has no fantasy value moving forward.
