The New England Patriots (2-1) traveled to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs (3-0) in Week 4. The Patriots were forced to start Brian Hoyer at quarterback after Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19 this past Saturday. The Chiefs’ defense was too dominant, forcing four turnovers and two sacks on the Patriots’ lackluster backup quarterbacks. Despite a close first half, the Chiefs dominated in the second half and won the game 26-10.
First Half
New England’s defense looked great in the first half. They shut the Chiefs down in the red zone, holding them to two field goals. Stephon Gilmore, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, forced a fumble in the second quarter, which led to a Patriots field goal.
Perhaps the turning point in the game came on the final play of the first half. Brian Hoyer ran backward to try and evade a Chiefs defender but was sacked and as a result, the clock expired. If Hoyer had thrown the ball away, the Patriots would have been able to tie the game with a field goal heading into the half.
Second Half
The second half was a whole new game. New England drove 70 yards down the field to the Kansas City five-yard line before fumbling the ball on a strip-sack. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs would respond with a quick drive that ended in a Tyreek Hill touchdown.
After a brutal start from Hoyer, Bill Belichick made the switch to Jarrett Stidham at quarterback. On his first drive of the season, Stidham led the Patriots down the field and threw a touchdown to wide receiver N’Keal Harry to cut the lead to 10-13. On the following drive, Mahomes would connect with Mecole Hardman to put the Chiefs back up by 10. Stidham’s first throw of the next series ended up in the hands of Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu who ran 25 yards for a touchdown, effectively ending the game 26-10.
Patriots’ running back Damien Harris, who returned from an injury this week, rushed for 100 yards on 17 carries. On the other side, the Chiefs were relatively quiet tonight in the stat sheets however, Hill and Travis Kelce had several big plays, and rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire totaled 91 scrimmage yards in the game.

The Kansas City Chiefs move to 4-0 on the season, marking the first time in NFL history that a team has started 4-0 in four consecutive seasons. They look to stay undefeated next week against the Las Vegas Raiders. Meanwhile, the New England Patriots drop to 2-2 and will face a banged-up Denver Broncos in Week 5. On the bright side, Newton should be available next week.
