Erring police officers must be made to pay hefty damages to the families of their victims- Banky W advocates

Erring police officers must be made to pay hefty damages to the families of their victims. Singer Banky W opines to serve as a deterrent to others.

Singer, Banky W is of the opinion that, aside from putting an end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad SARS, other disciplinary steps, such as the compliance of erring officers to pay high fines to their victims, must be placed in place to act as a deterrent to others.

He said that it is not enough to change or scrap the unit, as the officers who are in SARS will still be drawn back to the Nigerian police force.

He made an obvious point that the Nigerian Police Force recruited the Personnel in the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and are answerable to the Force Headquarters. This means that scrapping the Force Unit does not change the individual, but a replication of the brutality even while discharging his duty if not properly cautioned.

He said this on his Twitter handle. It reads.

”The Govt must #EndSarsNow. But we can’t stop at the ban, because the same corrupt officers will still be in the Police force and just continue the behaviour. #EndSARS but also commit that any officer involved in extortion or brutality faces immediate suspension, investigated & charged.

They must also hold police liable for damages in proven cases. They must pay hefty damages to the families of their victims… directly out of their yearly budget!! When they hurt us, it must hurt their pockets. I’ve lost count of how many times we have to raise money for victims.

Mr President, this is the reform effort we want: – #EndSARS – Any officer involved, caught in Extorting/assaulting citizens is immediately suspended without pay, investigated and charged – Police must be held liable to pay damages for their conduct in proven cases.
