Sir Elton John turned down Liza Minnelli's marriage proposal

Sir Elton John once rejected a proposal from Liza Minnelli.

The 73-year-old music icon - who is married to David Furnish - has claimed actress Liza once proposed to him when they were at a party at the legendary 70s New York club, Studio 54.

Elton said most people at the party were “doing lines” of cocaine, but insisted he was sober enough to reject Liza’s proposal.

He recalled: “There was a downstairs area that had pinball machines with lines and lines of coke and you’d bump into everyone there, from politicians to ballet dancers to actors to singers.

“Everyone down there was doing lines of coke.

“Liza Minnelli once proposed to me down there. She asked: ‘Will you marry me?’ At which point I broke the 100m sprint record and left.”

The ‘Tiny Dancer’ hitmaker also revealed he once made Rod Stewart take amyl nitrites - which are also known as “poppers” - in the nightclub.

Speaking to Dua Lipa on Instagram Live, he added: “He wouldn’t get up and dance. I got up on there and had a bottle of poppers. I said, ‘Come up and dance – how can you not dance?’

“I shoved the bottle up his nose and he was on the dance floor for an hour and a half. ‘Give me some of those, dear.’ We had so much fun.”

Elton has now put his partying ways behind him and is focused on his family life at home with his husband and their sons, Elijah, seven, and Zachary, nine.

And amid the coronavirus pandemic, the ‘Rocket Man’ singer recently said spending time with his loved ones has been the one "silver lining" from the ongoing crisis.

He said: "The great thing about lockdown, and the silver lining, is that I've spent so much time with Zachary, Elijah and David.

"I never get to spend much time with them anyway, so since March when we left Australia we've been in complete lockdown either in Los Angeles or in Britain and we've spent every single day together and it's been wonderful."
