Breaking: 76ers Sending Al Horford to the Thunder

The Philadelphia 76ers have rid themselves of Al Horford and his bad contract, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Horford is being packaged with first- and second-round draft picks in exchange for Danny Green and Terrance Ferguson.

Woj added that the 76ers are also sending the rights to Vasilije Micic to OKC shortly after the announcement.

Green is not even an official member of the Oklahoma City Thunder yet. He will be acquired in the Dennis Schroder trade with the Lakers, which cannot be finalized until after the NBA Draft. That means this trade will either come following the completion of the Thunder-Lakers trade, or that it would become a three-way deal.

Horford was signed last offseason by Philadelphia to a four-year contract worth $109 million. Many questioned the move at the time, and it didn’t take long for those questions to become deserved. Things didn’t work on the court, as many predicted, and the 34-year-old Horford quickly became one of the worst contracts in the NBA.

Green’s returning contract is not ideal either, but it expires after the upcoming season. New team executive Daryl Morey made it a priority to dump Horford and his bad contract. Last season, the power forward averaged 11.9 points with 6.8 rebounds and four assists per game. It was his lowest-scoring season since the 2008-09 campaign.

Danny Green struggled down the stretch for the Lakers but still won his second championship in two seasons. Green shot just 34.7 percent from the field during the playoffs. If he can find anything close to his usual shooting success, he would be a big upgrade from Horford on the Philadelphia roster. Regardless, he is a better fit from day one for the Doc Rivers-led 76ers.

The Thunder have now stockpiled an eye-popping 18 first-round draft picks through 2026.
