Modern Warfare took home the title of esports game of the year from the Golden Joystick Awards, but the community begs to differ.
Last night was the 38th Golden Joystick Awards. An awards night which honors the best of the gaming industry, with one of the main awards being “Esports Game of the Year”. The nominees for the award were:
- Rainbow Six Siege
- League of Legends
- Valorant
- Fortnite
- NTT IndyCar Series iRacing
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Fifa 20
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Modern Warfare won the award and was named 2020’s esports game of the year. However, the Call of Duty community has a very different feel about the game. Almost every Call of Duty League professional expressed their dislike of Modern Warfare throughout the season, with many being fined for their opinions. Along with the competitive players, the community seemed to dislike the game too. However, the Call of Duty League consistently pulled in 300K + viewers for online events and battled through a global pandemic to bring us the esports competition we know and love.
With Modern Warfare winning the 2020 award, Black Ops Cold War will be looking to replicate this success and win the 2021 award. Black Ops Cold War is already bringing in around 50K concurrent viewers on small, invitational tournaments. With this kind of support, we expect the viewership to keep growing in 2021.
