Comedian John Mulaney has checked into a Pennsylvania rehab facility over the weekend for alcohol addiction.
Mulaney has spoken in the past about his battle with addiction. He started drinking when he was 13 years old. “I drank for attention,” he told Esquire last year. “I was really outgoing and then at 12, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking and I was hilarious again.”
The drinking then moved to drug use. “I never liked smoking pot. Then I tried cocaine and I loved it. I wasn’t a good athlete, so maybe it was some young male thing of, ‘this is the physical feat I can do. Three Vicodin and a tequila and I’m still standing. Who’s the athlete now?'” he said.
The 38-year-old comedian got sober after a bender when he was 23. The New York Post reported that he relapsed during the pandemic.
The former Saturday Night Live writer hosted the show twice this year, on February 29 and October 31. He also voices the character of Andrew Glouberman in Netflix’s hit series Big Mouth, the fourth season dropped earlier this month.
Mulaney recently joined Late Night with Seth Meyers as a member of the writing staff. Mulaney told Jimmy Kimmel, “I like having a boss, I like having assignments to do.” He wanted to put more of a routine in his life, due to the uncertainty of the pandemic.
Mulaney will star alongside Andy Samberg in the 2022 movie, Chip N’ Dale: Rescue Rangers. He also recently finished playing the footman in the upcoming live-action remake of Cinderella, starring Camila Cabello, James Corden and Billy Porter.
Mulaney’s two 2019 comedy specials are now streaming on Netflix, John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch and John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City. He also voiced the role as Spider-Ham in the 2018 film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Mulaney was also featured in the first season of Apple TV+’s Dickinson as author Henry Thoreau.
