Google's Fitbit takeover approved

Google's Fitbit takeover has been approved by the European Commission.

The EU had warned the acquisition could harm competition.

However, as reported by BBC, Google has made some pledges to address these concerns, and the commission's executive vice president Margarethe Vestager is content the deal will keep the market "open and competitive".

Initially, there were worries that Google could use the Fitbit data for targeted advertising as well as excluding third parties from the platform.

However, Google, has addressed these, and promised not to use any health, location or fitness data from the devices for advertising, while Fitbit data will be kept in a "silo" where it will be separate from all other data used for that purpose
