Fortnite Players Dominated Gaming Twitter In 2020

Benjyfishy, Mongraal and more received more impressions than most esports athletes.

The eyes on gaming in 2020 increased significantly. Much of that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to affect countries across the globe. In the absence of traditional sports, the focus shifted to esports as an alternative. Games like League of Legends, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty and many more thrived, given the circumstances. Esports engagements on Twitter boomed exponentially in 2020.

A recent blog post by the social media network revealed last year's raw numbers. "For the first time ever, there were more than 2 BILLION Tweets about gaming throughout the year. This is up 75% from 2019, with a 49% increase in unique authors," wrote Rishi Chadha, Twitter's Head of Gaming Content Partnerships. It's a milestone no matter which way you look at this surprising development. Although League of Legends commanded esports fans' attention everywhere, Fortnite shockingly dominated the list of "Most Tweeted About Esports Athletes."

Fortnite Players Claim Five out of Ten Spots

The competitive landscape in 2020 was brutal for Fortnite. Online tournaments became a necessity because of COVID-19, but that didn't stop the top players from remaining in the limelight. Five recognizable Fortnite competitors received the most mentions of anyone else in the esports bubble. Let's take a look at the top ten in their entirety:

FaZe Clan player Mongraal leads the way, and that should come as no surprise. He's arguably the most popular name in Fortnite, who recently secured his first Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS) victory. He is one of the most followed Fortnite players on Twitter, with 1.6 million in total. NRG Esports member benjyfishy snagged the second spot. Like Mongraal, Benjy hails from the EU region with a whopping 1.3 million followers. Fortnite fans recognize benjyfishy for his bubbly personality, immense skills and consistent tournament placements.

Fortnite World Cup 2019 Champion Bugha landed at the number four spot, behind Call of Duty player Seth "Scump" Abner. Bugha's monumental win in the summer of 2019 validated all of his hard work and put a cool $3 million in his pocket. He reaped the benefits of becoming one of Fortnite's most prominent names to the tune of 1.5 million followers on Twitter. Bugha continued to compile more consistent tournament results in 2020.

More Fortnite players make themselves heard

Right behind Bugha is Team Liquid's mitr0 coming in at number five. Mitr0 enjoyed the crowning achievement of his young career alongside Mongraal. The two long-time duo partners claimed their first FNCS Championship. Mitr0 sports over 840K Twitter followers, but the Dutch player does not tweet very often. Still, he has people talking and is a fan-favorite amongst the Fortnite competitive scene.

Multiple-time Fortnite tournament champion Zayt finished seventh on the list. This NA East player finished the year 2020 with a Fortnite Champion Series victory under his belt. His marquee win took place in Chapter 2 - Season 2 with long-time duo partner Rocco "Saf" Morales. Zayt is a pillar in competitive Fortnite. The Canadian runs the Elite Discord channel for all of the game's best players to scrim against each other. Many keep a watchful eye on his Twitter account, where he regularly roasts Epic Games for the developer's decisions and handling of the competitive following.

It's astounding to see where Fortnite is today versus where it was two or three years ago. The game evolved immensely, as did its competitors and personalities.

Other Fortnite Twitter Achievements

In a year that included roughly three and a half brand new seasons, Fortnite managed to generate impressions and keep people interested on Twitter. The famous Battle Royale title finished as the sixth "Most Followed Gaming Topic" of 2020, ahead of Call of Duty, Minecraft, Animal Crossing and Xbox. Additionally, Fortnite concluded the year as the fifth "Most Tweeted About Game." Despite the rhetoric that it's a "dead game," Fortnite remains alive and well in its fourth year of release.

2021 is a new year, and although competitive Fortnite will remain online, Epic Games always has something up their sleeves. It should be a fun year to continue what the developers and, more importantly, the community have built to this point.
