Adding to the deaths caused by Wednesday’s riots in the Capitol building, a second Capitol Police officer has died. While the first officer death came by injuries sustained from the rioters, the second officer has died by suicide.
The officer was on duty Wednesday when pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol building.
A brief statement from a spokesperson for the family of the deceased officer wrote, “His death is a tragedy that has deprived all of us of a dedicated public servant. His family has suffered a devastating loss.”
The family has specifically asked for privacy while they mourn their loss, and the officer’s name has not been released.
There have still not been any criminal charges in the death of the officer who died during the riots Wednesday. It is widely believed the officer, Brian Sicknick, was struck by a fire extinguisher during the melee, which led to his collapse and death later that day. In the wake of riots, Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund quickly resigned. In interviews since his resignation, the former chief has slammed the Pentagon for their initial unwillingness to support his officers in crowd control.
