Staley had been a top choice for the Chargers to become their next head coach. The Chargers were heavily pursued the former defensive coordinator. After being satisfied with their first interview, the team scheduled a second one after his playoff game with the Rams. After the second interview, they were able to secure a deal with the former Rams’ coach.

Staleys’ only season as the defensive coordinator brought success for the Rams. The Rams were first in yards allowed per game and passing yards allowed. The teams’ offense and the defense allowed them to make it to the playoffs as a wild card team.

Their defensive prowess was showcased against the Seattle Seahawks in the wild card round. Los Angeles was the underdog against the heavily favored Seattle team. Los Angeles’ defense shined in the game as they held Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson to just 174 passing yards and an interception. This enabled Los Angeles to upset Seattle and eliminate them 30-20.
