Stars celebrated the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris with humor and emotion

This Wednesday, January 20, as the United States welcomed a new president and a new vice president, social networks played host to emotional celebrations of this historic moment. Rihanna, Jimmy Kimmel, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Eva Longoria were just a few of the celebrities sharing their joy, often tinged with humor and above all hope.

"Jan 20, 2021. Congratulations Madam Vice-President . Our hearts soar! @kamalaharris @vp," posted actress Julia Louis-Dreyfuson her Instagram account as a caption for a photo of Kamala Harris taking the oath of public office. The actress who played the vice president of the United States in the hit comedy TV show "Veep" expressed her joy on the social networks as did a large number of other celebrities as they celebrated this historic day which saw the first woman take up the post of US vice president.

Images of the first female vice president of one of the world's most powerful countries have moved the famous and the not-famous alike on social networks. Actress Taraji P. Henson ("Empire," "Hidden Figures") shared a meme of Kamala Harris that reads: "Make sure to wear your shoes ladies. There is glass everywhere," referring to the famous expression of the glass ceiling, symbolizing the invisible barriers women face in their careers.

It is precisely this feat that many women (and men) have been praising on social networks. While Donald Trump's chaotic tenure was punctuated by misogynistic phrases, this new term symbolizes a new era, that of diversity, with the arrival of the first Black woman of South Asian descent in the post. A new era full of hope for both women and children, as successful actress and producer Mindy Kaling ("The Mindy Kaling Project," "The Office") perfectly demonstrated on her Instagram account. As a caption to a photograph of her young daughter watching Kamala Harris being sworn in, the actress wrote: "I was at work, but apparently she said: 'Is that mommy? It looks like mommy.' Best compliment I ever got! It matters. Happy Inauguration everyone."

Mariah Carey, Courteney Cox, Kris Jenner, Eva Longoria and many others celebrated the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Emotions ran high but there was also a good dose of humour to mark the departure of Donald Trump.

"I'm just here to help. #wediditJoe," posted Rihanna on her social networks as a caption for a sexy picture of her taking out the trash. A far from subtle wink to the singer's sentiments regarding the outgoing president. A publication that garnered more than 4 million "Likes" on Instagram.

And Donald Trump's departure clearly inspired popular American TV host Jimmy Kimmel. The man who never made a secret of his fierce opposition to the outgoing president shared a surprising and more than amusing video on Twitter, showing monuments, paintings and other well-known cultural signs singing the song "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" by Steam and ending with the song "Move Bitch" by Ludacris. The video, liked more than 133,000 times on the social network, displays almost 3 million views in less than 24 hours.
