Late Burnley penalty ends Liverpool's three-year unbeaten Anfield run

Jurgen Klopp’s side had gone almost four years without a home defeat in the league but Ashley Barnes ended the streak from the penalty spot

Burnley ended Liverpool’s three-year winning streak in the Premier League in Anfield on Thursday after Ashley Barnes converted the 83rd minute penalty to a 1-0 victory.

In a one-on-one ball challenge, Liverpool goalie Alisson’s hand tripped Barnes, and after the referee pointed to the spot, Barnes confidently dispatched the winner.

It’s Burnley’s first league win at Anfield since September 1974, while Liverpool’s impressive home run with no loss ends at 69 Premier League games, a streak that started in April 2017.

Liverpool’s run was the second-longest unbeaten run at home in English top-flight history. Only Chelsea‘s run of 86 league games unbeaten at Stamford Bridge, which ran to October 2008, was longer.

Since the start of last season, Liverpool have now played 12 games without Henderson in the league, losing four. They have lost only two of the 45 games in which he has played.

The Premier League champions, who sit fourth on the table, have also failed to score in their last four and are still without a league victory in 2021.

Frustrated in a stalemate with new Manchester United leaders last week, Liverpool is the first time to have played four Premier League games without a score since the 1999-2000 season.

Divock Origi was approaching the end of Liverpool’s goalless run three minutes before the Belgian striker struck the crossbar.

Burnley goalie Nick Pope denied Liverpool defenseman Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah in the second half as England’s international completed an outstanding result.

The hard-won 16th-placed Burnley win means Sean Dyche’s side is five points clear of the 19th-placed relegation zone.

Liverpool’s Juergen Klopp now has 34 goals, six away from Manchester United, who will play in the FA Cup on Sunday.
