Washington (AFP) - The United States on Thursday banned the entry of Slovakia's controversial former prosecutor general, Dobroslav Trnka, saying he undermined democracy through corruption.
Trnka, who was arrested last year on part of a corruption investigation, and his son will be ineligible to come to the United States, the State Department said.
Trnka "was involved in corrupt acts that undermined rule of law and the Slovak public's faith in their government's democratic institutions, officials and public processes," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.
"The United States continues to stand with the people of Slovakia in their fight against corruption," Blinken said.
Trnka has been alleged to have accepted bribes and to have been involved in other corruption during his term as the prosecutor general.
In 2011, parliament refused to vote him in to a new term as top prosecutor with the then prime minister, Iveta Radicova, threatening to quit if he stayed on.
US law requires action against overseas officials over corruption. President Joe Biden's administration has vowed to step up efforts to promote democracy, including in allied nations.
