Prior to the 2020 NFL season, three questions were posed for each of the 32 teams. This is the recap and answers to those questions for the San Francisco 49ers.

Does Jimmy Garoppolo have enough weapons?

Jimmy G started just six games in 2020. He suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 2 and the second one in Week 7 that ended his season. As for his weapons, they missed significant time as well throughout the season. Nick Mullens and CJ Beathard both got playing time filling in for Garoppolo.

Many around the league including those in the Bay area believe it also may be the end of Garoppolo’s time as the 49ers starting quarterback. Kirk Cousins and Deshawn Watson have been two of the names rumored to be on San Fran’s radar.

Will their defense carry them again?

The elite defense that got this team to the Super Bowl was rattled with injuries. Nick Boss and Solomon Thomas each tore an ACL in the same game in Week 2 against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. The defense fielded mostly second and third-string players all season long and wasn’t terrible, but ultimately they weren’t close to the stellar form from a season ago.

Could they repeat as NFC champions?

Hopes were high for the 49ers entering last season. It was believed that it would be the Seattle Seahawks and themselves fighting for NFC West supremacy from beginning to end. But injuries decimated this team in addition to the previously mentioned Garoppolo, Bosa, and Thomas. George Kittle, Richard Sherman, Raheem Mostert, Dee Ford, Trent Williams, Brandon Aiyuk, Kendrick Bourne, Deebo Samuel, Jordan Reed, and Ezekiel Ansah all missed multiple games. It was just San Francisco’s turn to be rattled with injuries. If they get those names back on the field in 2021 they could be back to Super Bowl form.
