Tokyo stocks retreated Tuesday morning as investors gave up seeking higher ground without fresh trading cues, locking in early gains made on an overnight advance in U.S. shares.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 108.75 points, or 0.37 percent, from Monday to 29,554.75. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 9.07 points, or 0.48 percent, at 1,893.41.

Decliners were led by air transportation, marine transportation and mining issues.
