Nomadland and Rocks lead BAFTA nominations

'Nomadland' and 'Rocks' lead the list of nominees for this year's BAFTA Film Awards.

The Chloe Zhao-directed drama movie has received seven nominations in total, including Best Film, Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actress (Frances McDormand), Cinematography, Editing and Sound.

The acclaimed filmmaker - who recently won the Best Director gong at the Golden Globes - will face competition for the coveted accolade from the likes of Thomas Vinterberg, Shannon Murphy, Lee Isaac Chung, Jasmila Zbanic and Sarah Gavron, the director of 'Rocks'.

The coming-of-age drama movie has also received seven nominations, including nods in the categories of Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut By a British Writer, Director or Producer, Original Screenplay, and Casting.

Elsewhere, 'The Father', 'Mank', 'Minari', and 'Promising Young Woman' have all received six nominations each.

'The Father' - which is helmed by Florian Zeller and stars the likes of Sir Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman - tells the story of an ageing man who is struggling to deal with his progressing memory loss.

The movie has been nominated in the Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actor, Editing and Production Design categories.

Similarly, 'Mank' - the biographical drama about screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz - has received nods in the categories of Original Screenplay, Original Score, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Make-up and Hair.

Meanwhile, 'The Dig' and 'The Mauritanian' have been handed five nominations, while 'Another Round', 'Calm With Horses', 'Judas and the Black Messiah', 'News of the World' and 'Sound of Metal' have all been handed four nods.

In the acting categories, 16 of the 24 acting nominees this year represent ethnic minority groups, with the event having attracted criticism last year for its lack of diversity.

In 2020, not one actor of colour was nominated for an award and the Academy subsequently came under fire for its decisions.

This year, however, the likes of Daniel Kaluuya, Riz Ahmed, Dominique Fishback, Tahar Rahim and Bukky Bakray have all been given nods, while the likes of Viola Davis, Sacha Baron Cohen, Olivia Colman, Glenn Close and Gary Oldman - some of whom had been tipped for success - have been overlooked.

Krishnendu Majumdar, the BAFTA chair, has hailed this year's list of nominees as a watershed moment for the Academy.

He said: "After last year's nominations, we started the BAFTA Review process with the intention of levelling the playing field and introduced a range of measures to ensure that all entered films were seen by our members and judged on merit.

"We hope today you can see some of those changes reflected in the breadth and depth of those nominated and we congratulate all our nominees."

The award winners will be announced at a ceremony without a live audience on April 11.
