Twitter founder's first ever tweet sells for $2.9m

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey's first ever tweet has sold for $2.9 million (£2.1 million).

Malaysia-based businessman Sina Estavi bought the tweet - which was first published on March 21, 2006 and read "just setting up my twttr" - using the ether cryptocurrency as part of an online charity auction.

Dorsey has revealed he will convent the proceeds to bitcoin before donating them to the Give Directly's Africa Response fund.

Estavi - chief executive of tech company Bridge Orale - bought the tweet as a nonfungible token (NFT), which is a unique digital certificate stating who owns a photo, video or form of online media.

Each NFT is unique and can't be duplicated, which makes them a rare collector's item, with digital artwork sold in this way.

The historic tweet was sold via online platform Valuables which is owned by Cent, who will take 5% of the proceeds with Dorsey taking the rest.

Even after the auction, the post will be publicly available on Twitter, although Estavi will get a certificate - digitally signed and verified by Dorsey - and the tweet's metadata, which includes the text contents and information such as the time it was posted.

Responding to the news on Twitter itself, Estavi wrote: "This is not just a tweet! I think years later people will realize the true value of this tweet, like the Mona Lisa painting (sic)"
