Brooklyn Nets superstar Kyrie Irving will miss the next three games because of a personal family matter.
On Monday, the team released a Twitter statement confirming the news. “Kyrie Irving will not accompany the team on this week’s three-game road trip (POR/UTA/DET) in order to tend to a family matter,” the team wrote.
Brooklyn will be left shorthanded without Irving and they are still without superstar Kevin Durant. Durant has been sidelined due to a hamstring injury since February 13. According to head coach Steve Nash, Durant is closer to returning to the team. In addition, key bench player Landry Shamet will also miss the three-day road trip due to a sprained right ankle from Sunday’s game against the Washington Wizards.
So far in the season, Irving has played in 31 of the team’s 43 games. In January, the guard missed two weeks because of personal absence. During that specific absence, Irving was put in the spotlight for breaking coronavirus protocol. The All-Star was seen partying with other people without a mask and ignoring social distancing guidelines.
The incident resulted in the delay of the All-Star’s return to the team. Furthermore, Irving was fined for violating the league’s coronavirus protocol. Upon returning, the All-Star told reporters he “just needed a pause.” The superstar has only missed four games for injury maintenance since then.
The point guard has been averaging 28.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game this season.
