Heller Answers His 3 Burning Questions: Los Angeles Rams

Prior to the 2020 NFL season, three questions were posed for each of the 32 teams. This is the recap and answers to those questions for the Los Angeles Rams.

If you want to look back at the previous article you can do that here.

Make or break season for Goff?

The first overall pick in 2016 Jared Goff had a down season statistically. He failed to reach the 4,000-yard passing mark, something he had accomplished in his two prior seasons when he eclipsed the 4,600-yard mark. He threw just 20 touchdown passes against 13 interceptions. His effort did help lead his total to a Wildcard spot and a playoff win against division rival the Seattle Seahawks.

But it was apparently the break season for the four-year quarterback. Los Angeles traded Goff to the Detroit Lions for veteran, and the number one overall pick in 2009, Matthew Stafford shortly after the season came to an end.

Is the defense still among the top three in the NFL?

The team’s playoffs appearance was more of a credit to the defense, rather than the offense. Aaron Donald wreaked havoc on opposing offensive lineman and quarterbacks alike. He ended the season with 13 and a half sacks. Donald was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the third time in four years. And the secondary was one of the best groups in football.

Will they pick up another running back?

The team used a committee to fill the role of Todd Gurley, who was a salary cap casualty last offseason. The trio of Malcolm Brown, Darrell Henderson, and 2020 second-round pick Cam Akers combined for over 1,600 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns. Brown is now in Miami, but Akers and Henderson as a one-two punch will help this team and their new signal-caller.
