Writer Max Boot Urges Conservatives To Become ‘Biden Republicans’

Writer and foreign policy expert Max Boot wrote a new op-ed on Thursday asking “What Does The GOP Stand For Anymore?” Citing the party’s increasingly obstructionist agenda and blurry policy beliefs, Boot believes the GOP of today will eventually disappear as Americans slowly pull the political center more to the left.

“The GOP remains a cult of personality for the worst president in United States history. It has become a bastion of irrationality, conspiracy mongering, racism, nativism and anti-scientific prejudices,” Boot wrote in his Washington Post  op-ed.

Boot specifically appealed to Americans in the political middle. “Centrists have a binary choice: Support either an increasing extremist and obstructionist Republican Party or a Democratic Party that, under President [Joe] Biden, is working to solve out most pressing problems.”

“Biden is governing from the ‘new center,’ while Republicans are increasingly catering to the far right with shrill, divisive rhetoric and antidemocratic actions such as bills to restrict voting,” Boot said after GOP state senates in both Texas and Georgia moved forward on sweeping voting restrictions. “Under those circumstances, those of us on the center-right can’t afford a third-party flirtation. We need to become Biden Republicans,” he wrote.

Boot later said in an interview, “Joe Biden has a historic opportunity to accelerate and cement” America’s political center. “Even though he’s not winning any Republican votes for his legislation so far, he is winning a lot of support in the country at large, and you’re seeing sixty to seventy percent of Americans supporting him.”
