Nintendo 'plans to focus on original games'

Nintendo intends to focus on creating original games, according to Shuntaro Furukawa.

The 49-year-old company president has given an insight into Nintendo's long-term plan, revealing the tech firm will focus its attention on developing new games.

He told Nikkei: "In the future, we will focus on creating new game series as well as long-sellers such as 'Mario' and 'Zelda'."

Shuntaro also touched on the company’s hardware plans for the future, saying: "We are constantly building up ideas for the new consoles the market is expecting."

The Nintendo president explained that the company needs to keep being innovative in order to compete with rival brands in the market.

He said: "Games are not a necessity of life. In order for customers to choose games in their finite time, they have to be interesting. Competition is tough."

And Shuntaro revealed that behind the scenes at Nintendo, people are working diligently to develop new and innovative things.

The businessman - who took over as company president in June 2018, succeeding Tatsumi Kimishima - explained: "The hardware and software development teams are in the same building, communicating closely and thinking about how we can propose new forms of entertainment."
