There’s no scientific proof that alum water can cure COVID-19

A video shared thousands of times claims that alum water can save people from contracting the deadly virus and make coronavirus patients healthy. The claim is FALSE.

A youtubevideo with thousands of views claims that alum water can cure COVID-19 and can save people from contracting the virus. The claim is false and misleading people

The video further suggests that after having a daily meal “take half a glass of water, add alum powder, drink it, Coronavirus can’t go to the places where alum water went”.

This video is being widely shared on social media here, here , here, here and here.

Alum or phitkari is a transparent salt-like substance that is commonly used in water treatment. However, there is no scientific evidence supporting the claims in the above videos being widely circulated.

Responding to this, Dr Shimna Azeez, medical officer at Manjeri Medical College in Malappuram District, Kerala said, “There is no scientific evidence that Alum water can cure coronavirus. Such false medical remedies may land one in trouble as they are baseless, unscientific procedures. “

Also, the government official fact-checking body, the Press Information Bureau, has dismissed this claim. The fact check stated that there is no scientific evidence and the claim is false and misleading.
