Luka Doncic Signs A Supermax Extension With Dallas Mavericks

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLORIDA - AUGUST 23: Luka Doncic #77 of the Dallas Mavericks celebrates a game winning three point basket against the LA Clippers during overtime in Game Four of the Western Conference First Round during the 2020 NBA Playoffs...

Luka Doncic has signed a five-year supermax deal with the Dallas Mavericks worth $207 million. The news was initially broken by several news outlets before confirmation by Doncic’s agent, Bill Duffy.

This deal is the largest guaranteed rookie extension in NBA history and Doncic is the first player to sign such a deal based on the stipulation of earning All-NBA First-Team honors in two of his first three seasons.

In a statement released by the Mavericks, Doncic said, “Today is a dream come true. The game of basketball has given me so much and has taken me to so many amazing places. I am humbled and excited to remain in Dallas as part of the Mavericks. I’m committed to the organization and appreciate the support of my fans. Along with this contract, I’m also happy to announce that I am increasing my efforts and expanding The Luka Dončić Foundation. My foundation is an international nonprofit that will give back to places that mean so much to me like my home country of Slovenia, as well as the communities of North Texas.”

Doncic was still on the rookie contract he signed when he was drafted third overall in the 2018 NBA Draft. However, his outstanding performances have shown the value he can provide, leaving the Mavericks with no choice but to act quickly and secure his future with the team. Doncic was named an All-Star in his second and third seasons with the team after being named Rookie of the Year in 2019. Doncic’s earning of All-NBA First-Team in his second and third season makes him the first player eligible for a supermax deal off of their rookie contract.
