Trev Alberts: Excellence Doesn't Happen Overnight

Nebraska's athletic director knows it's the small things that count

Today's video is a thoughtful look at what excellence really is.

Trev Alberts is many things, and at the top of that list is eloquent. He speaks well and makes sense. Another quality is that he gets it. That's why I think I like this hire more and more as time goes on.

I'm not a 5 hearts over 5 stars guy by any means, but I am a Rome wasn't built in a day guy. I don't think that the problems as of late are necessarily talent issues but more a lack of patience.

And here comes the "PaTienCe!?!?!?! We HavEn'T WoN A CoNFEreNce ChAMPiONShIp In 20 YeARs" crowd.

That's not what I'm talking about. Since Tom Osborne left we've had five coaches. That about 4.5 years years per coach and in the middle we changed to a completely different conference from what Pelini was building a team for. I think you can argue that was almost like a coaching change in itself. It takes time to build a team into your image. It takes time to convince the 5 stars that you're doing the right things. The tough part is that today the world doesn't want to give you time. It lacks patience. (I blame MTV but I'll save this rant for a later date.)

However, that's just part of it.

Now while we learn to show patience, we have to believe that Scott Frost is doing all the little things right over and over and over and over again forever. Because that's excellence. It's kind of like how the Theory of Relativity is -- just basic math stacked on basic math until it seems complicated but at the base of it it's just 1+1 a million times.

Trev understands this. That's why I like him. It's like the old saying "Keep it simple, Stupid." Well, it's what my teachers always said to me so maybe it's not a quote - I don't know. I'm not a quote scientist.

With all that being said, I think this next season will be very telling. I hope it goes well because what I want more than any particular coach succeeding is for the Huskers to be good again. I hope we start to see signs of that happening this year. So go watch the video above and hold onto your butts until December because its def gonna be exciting one way or another.
