What are the most sought-after countries for spending retirement?

France, Canada and Argentina are the medallists when it comes to most searched countries on Google for spending retirement, according to a study. The progressive lifting of pandemic-related restrictions in various countries have sparked web users to start thinking about going abroad for their golden years and even to start researching the prospects.

France is on top of the world... when it comes to desirable destinations of retirees who want to move to another country. That's the finding of a study conducted by the website money.co.uk which analyzed Google data.

"With great food, a laid-back lifestyle as well as typically pleasant weather, it's easy to see why [France] was the top choice for many. Its famous wine regions and delicious regional cuisines mean that there's plenty of local produce to sample. In fact, the country is home to over 27,000 wineries and an impressive 3,177 Michelin-rated restaurants, so you'll be spoilt for choice in retirement if wining and dining is your thing," notes the report.

But France is not the only country attracting new retirees. In second place in the ranking of 136 countries is Canada, well known for being "friendly" and home to "beautiful scenery." The country of the maple leaf can also count on its good reputation for health care. In third place comes Argentina.

Is Portugal the new land of promise?

In its study, the website notes that Portugal is a popular choice as one of the most popular golf destinations, with the Algarve region alone boasting 31 golf courses, while for UK retirees Spain is desirable as a "country with a large expatriate community" and "up to 3,000 hours of sunshine per year."
