Proud Boys Leader Enrique Tarrio Begs For Lighter Sentence: ‘I’m Deathly Afraid’

MIAMI, FLORIDA - MAY 25: Enrique Tarrio (C), leader of the Proud Boys, uses a megaphone while counter-protesting people gathered at the Torch of Friendship to commemorate the one year anniversary of the killing of George Floyd on May 25, 2021...

Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio pleaded with a judge on Monday to reduce his jail sentence from five months to 90 days.

Tarrio, who was sentenced after burning a Black Lives Matter flag taken from a historic Black church in December, told D.C. Superior Court Judge Jonathan Pittman: “I’ve been to jail before and what I’ve seen here, I’ve never seen anywhere else. This place needs to be shut down immediately.”

Tarrio claims he has been abused by guards and subjected to medical neglect during his incarceration at D.C.’s Central Detention Facility (CDF).

Tarrio testified: “I’m deathly afraid that something is going to happen to me.”

Pittman will rule on whether to reduce Tarrio’s sentence by the end of the week.

D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine commented on Tarrio’s testimony, stating: “Concerns about conditions at the jail received little attention until they were raised by mostly white defendants accused of perpetrating the Jan. 6 insurrection.”

The Proud Boys were recently subpoenaed by the Jan. 6 Committee investigating the attack of the U.S. Capitol.
