How to maximize your ebike's battery range

Electric bikes are on the rise. Although most models have a range of more than 40 km, there are still a few simple ways riders can help save battery to maximize their ebike's range.

The range of an electric bicycle obviously depends on the capacity of its battery. With 400 Wh, an ebike can, for example, hope to run for about 60 km in electric mode. In fact, it all depends on how you use your bike, and especially on the speed at which you ride, or the hills involved in your journey.

However, there are several ways riders can help optimize this range. Here's a look at some things to try.

Overinflating tires

Simply overinflating your tires slightly can save some battery life. Be careful, it is above all recommended when riding on a flat and smooth terrain -- on a well-maintained asphalt road, for example. Indeed, the surface in contact with the ground is slightly reduced and the risks of falling are consequently a little higher. Also, be careful not to exceed the pressure limit, which is usually stated directly on the tire.

Check the transmission

A clean and greased transmission is necessary to avoid losing efficiency and thus affecting the overall range of the machine. Indeed, the stiffer the transmission, the more the motor will have to work. This is why it is advisable to regularly check the condition of the various parts that make up the transmission and remember to grease them if necessary.

Switch to "Eco" mode

When available, an "Eco" or "Economic" mode should obviously be preferred in order to reduce battery use, especially when the ground is flat and the electric assistance is not too high. Don't waste energy on downhill rides either, where you should cut off all electric assistance.

Sit properly

Finally, even if the gain in range may seem derisory, simply sitting correctly on your electric bike can help save a little battery. This involves leaning slightly forward, without spreading your arms too much, in order to optimize aerodynamics and air penetration, all while remaining in a comfortable position.
