Former PresidentDonald Trump officially endorsed TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania.

“This is all about winning elections in order to stop the Radical Left maniacs from destroying our country,” Trump said in an official statement. “I have known Dr. Oz for many years, as have many others, even if only through his very successful television show. He has lived with us through the screen and has always been popular, respected, and smart.”

Dr. Oz’s main challenger is David McCormick, who had both been vying for the former President’s support. McCormick, a former hedge funder who was a George W. Bush administration official, is married to Dina Powell, a former Trump aide. Trump’s endorsement of Oz is controversial, as some Republicans find it difficult to trust the celebrity doctor who has been known to alternate between pro-life and pro-choice stances.

Senate Minority LeaderMitch McConnell(R-Kentucky) did not second Trump’s endorsement.

“I think we’ve got a good choice of candidates in Pennsylvania. I think we’ve been in a good position to win that race regardless of who the nominee is. I guess we’ll find in the next few weeks how much this endorsement made a difference,” McConnell told Fox News Sunday.
