New York (AFP) - Police in New York arrested a 25-year-old man Tuesday on suspicion of shooting dead a bank executive on the city subway at the weekend.
After a two-day manhunt, Andrew Abdullah, whose identity and photo had been released, was taken into custody, the New York Police Department announced on Twitter.
According to the New York Times, he surrendered to law enforcement in Chinatown, in the southern part of Manhattan.
He was arrested over the murder of Daniel Enriquez, 48, a Goldman Sachs executive who was shot in the chest at noon on Sunday with a 9mm bullet while traveling on the subway between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
According to local media, the killer shot his victim for no apparent reason before quietly getting off the train, handing his gun to a homeless person on the platform, and then vanishing.
The murder sent fresh shockwaves through a city reeling from a spike in lethal gun crime.
In April, a man set off smoke bombs in a Brooklyn subway car and opened fire on dozens of terrified passengers, injuring 23 people.
New York Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, himself a former police officer, was elected in late 2021 on a pledge to tackle crime and the spread of illegal guns in the city.
