New York City is moving ahead with a plan to introduce a new toll system for drivers entering Manhattan. The costs could add up to $23 for some drivers traveling to the financial district and the midtown area. The new system, called “congestion pricing,” is predicted to pull in $1 billion more revenue for the city.
According to the Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA), there are about eight million commuters that travel into and out of the area.
The highest tolls will be for truckers, who will have to pay from about $12-$82 per trip.
The MTA subways are expected to introduce new trains in the September of this year after several production delays.
In the recent past, flooding and security have been a top concern for the MTA as anti-Asian and homeless crimes spiked during the pandemic. With the increased funding, the MTA could begin to implement guard rails as demands increase from concerned passengers.
The planning is awaiting final approval from the MTA board, which is expected soon.
