The House panel investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol voted on Thursday to subpoena former President Donald Trump.
All nine members of the committee, including both Republicans, voted in favor.
The committee has built a case that puts Trump at the center of the riot, showing how the former president summoned his supporters to march to the Capitol and knew the crowd was armed.
“We are obligated to seek answers directly from the man who set this all in motion,” Committee’s Vice Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) said. “And every American is entitled to those answers, so we can act now to protect our republic.”
The voting took place at what may have been the panel’s final public hearing and only a few weeks before the midterm elections.
It’s still unclear if Trump will comply with the subpoena. He has repeatedly attacked the panel during the last few months.
In April of this year, a New York judge held Trump in contempt of court for not complying with a civil subpoena for documents that the state attorney general had issued as part of an investigation into Trump’s business practices. He paid a fine of $110,000 and is no longer in contempt of court.
Committee members have suggested that if the former president agrees with testify he would only be allowed to do so live.
