Big Ten Conference Looking for New Commissioner

Kevin Warren to join the Chicago Bears as team president and CEO

The Big Ten Conference will be needing a new commissioner.

The Chicago Bears announced Thursday the naming of Kevin Warren as their new team president and CEO. Warren has experience with multiple NFL teams. He will begin official club business in the spring.

Warren has spent the last three years as Big Ten Conference commissioner. He joined the Big Ten right at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Warren's leadership resulted in a mixed bag of reactions. When the 2020 football season was canceled (ultimately postponed and later resumed), the commissioner's messaging fell flat as other leagues were set to play, including the SEC where his son played. Warren was tasked with the unenviable job of being the face for decisions that ultimately came from the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors (COP/C).

But Warren will also be credited for being at the head of the league during another round of expansion. In a statement Thursday, the COP/C says he was "pivotal in the expansion from 14-to-16 academic and athletic member institutions and leading the media rights negotiations for the conference."

That same statement notes that the league "remains in a position of strength during this pivotal time in collegiate athletics and its world-class institutions remain committed to providing an exceptional experience for our student-athletes."

A national search will begin for the seventh Big Ten Conference commissioner.
