By Juan Pablo Pérez Burgos No one on the Colombian island of Providencia was prepared for what happened on the night of Nov. 16, 2020. Not even Josefina Huffington, who had survived four hurricanes. That evening, as she waited for the storm to pass by playing parchisi with her son, a tree, lifted by winds as fast as 305 kilometers per hour (190 miles per hour), smashed against her window. “This is it,” she recalls telling him as she saw the roof fly away. They survived the storm, but their 1,700-hectare (4,200-acre) island, part of the San Andrés Archipelago, was turned into rubble. “The color...

I was nine years old when I learned of Kurt Cobain’s death. At that time, all I knew about Cobain was Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ being played on repeat on MTV, and the striking image of a naked baby swimming for a dollar on the 'Nevermind' poster taped to my neighbour’s bedroom wall. I always looked up to my neighbours, siblings who are respectively three and five years older than me – an age gap which was a huge deal for a younger me with little to no cool factor to speak of. They were my cool factor, the gatekeepers to know-how I lacked. Both brothers frequently took me under their ...

By Liz Kimbrough Carlos Zorrilla is a leader in what locals say is the longest continuous resistance movement against mining in Latin America. Zorrilla’s family fled from Cuba to the U.S. in 1962 when he was 11 years old. He moved to the Intag Valley in Ecuador in the 1970s, citing his love for the cloud forest ecosystem there. Soon after he arrived, so did the first of the mining companies. Over the following decades, Zorrilla and the organizations he co-founded, including DECOIN (Defensa y Conservación Ecológica de Intag), helped block five transnational mining companies and a national compa...

The judge declared that the relevant policies had been considered by the British government and that the evidence presented by the activists "provides no basis" for contesting them. Nevertheless, one part of the appeal, relating to the Ministry of Transport's position on environmental impact, will be the subject of a later ruling. Thousands mark Summer solstice in an annual celebration at StonehengeNational Highways says the tunnel wil...

Members of Germany's climate activism group Last Generation say they will no longer glue themselves to streets in protest. The controversial tactic has infuriated many in recent years as it is used to block traffic and create chaos in busy cities, in a bid to create "peaceful friction". But the group said on Monday that it will abandon the approach and move on to holding what it calls “disobedient assemblies”. The Last Generation group frequently blocked roads in Berlin and other cities over the past two years, its best-known but far from its only tactic in a campaign of protests that also inc...

Two climate activists hurled soup Sunday at the glass protecting the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum in Paris and shouted slogans advocating for a sustainable food system.
