The Cannes Film Festival starts next week, on Tuesday (14 May), with the opening film Le Deuxième Acte from French absurdist Quentin Dupieux. However, it’s already off to a rocky start, with a French labour group representing freelance workers at film festivals calling for a strike. As if that wasn’t enough of a headache for the Croisette, speculation is mounting in the French media over rumours that a bombshell #MeToo exposé will drop on the day of the opening. Indeed, there are rumours of a mysterious list of 10 actors / directors / producers who are set to be accused of #MeToo allegations d...

Despite my dislike for films which think it’s cool to replace title letters with numbers – Se7en being the exemption to that rule – this strange looking hitman film shot in infrared with rapper Travis Scott attached to the project initially looked intriguing. Plus, AGGRO DR1FT is the first film from a new production company helmed by director Harmony Korine, the provocateur behind films like Gummo, Trash Humpers and Spring Breakers. Acquired tastes, sure, but envelope-pushing in their own ways. Then came the screening. Oh boy, the screening. It came. The kindest descriptive is that it’s an unc...

Days before the premiere of his new film The Seed of the Sacred Fig in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, acclaimed Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof has been sentenced to eight years in prison and flogging in Iran for national security crimes. He’ll also be subjected to a fine and the confiscation of property. In a statement on X, Rasoulof’s lawyer Babak Paknia said the court found Rasoulof’s films and documentaries to be “examples of collusion with the intention of committing a crime against the security of the country.” The filmmaker, 52, has been a target of the authoritarian regime...

Legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert will head up the 2024 Venice Film Festival jury this year. Serving as jury president of the 81st edition, Huppert will hand out the Golden Lion and other awards when the festival on the Lido concludes. In a statement, Huppert said: “There is a long and beautiful history between the Festival and I. Becoming a privileged spectator is an honor. More than ever, cinema is a promise. The promise to escape, to disrupt, to surprise, to take a good look at the world, united in the differences of our tastes and ideas.” Huppert was previously jury president at Ca...

A collective representing freelance film festival workers in France has called for a strike during the Cannes Film Festival, which begins next Monday (14 May). The labour group, called Sous les écrans, la dèche (Broke behind the screens), said the strike wasn’t meant to shut down the festival, or damage any of the films that are premiering in Cannes, but rather to “disturb” proceedings. A labour strike is an exceedingly rare occurrence for Cannes. The world’s largest film festival has only been affected by social action once in its 76 years of operation. In 1968, the 21st edition of the festiv...

Employees of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival called for a strike over what they consider precarious working conditions on Monday, less than a week before the festival is set to begin in southern France. A labour collective of workers at the festival appealed on Monday to "all employees of the Cannes Film Festival and parallel sections" to disrupt the screenings, according to a statement reported by various French media. Those involved in the labour action, including projectionists and ticket sellers, complain about the increasing instability and lack of job security of their professions. ...

Happy May! And may it be filled with many a cool cultural plan. As anticipation builds for Cannes 2024 (Messi, the dog from Anatomy of a Fall, will be filming his own show at the festival FYI) there's also the fashion mecca that is 2024's Met Gala, the Eurovision Song Contest, the ongoing Venice Biennale and much, much more in store for the rest of the month. This week, we're perhaps most excited about a Kimono exhibition opening in Scotland, Ryan Gosling's fun new action movie The Fall Guy, and listening to Dua Lipa's latest album, 'Radical Optimism' \- a thing we try to channel in these dige...

After his inventive and rather wonderful animated film J’ai perdu mon corps (I Lost My Body), French filmmaker Jérémy Clapin returns with a live action sci-fi feature for his sophomore effort. And he’s still got loss on his mind. While a hand was looking for its body in his first feature, Pendant ce temps sur Terre (Meanwhile on Earth) revolves around another absence – that of Elsa's brother, Franck. The two siblings (Les passagers de la nuit ’s Megan Northam and Sam Louwyck) were close, and nothing was ever the same after the eldest mysteriously disappeared during a space mission three years ...

Daniel Radcliffe has opened up about J.K. Rowling’s comments about the trans community. Her main star, who played the famous wizard in the film series, has commented in a new interview. Speaking to The Atlantic about his current role in the Broadway production of "Merrily We Roll Along", Radcliffe said: “It makes me really sad, ultimately. Because I do look at the person that I met, the times that we met, and the books that she wrote, and the world that she created, and all of that is to me so deeply empathic.” He confirmed that he has not had any contact with Rowling since she began making th...

The review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes has revealed its list of the highest-rated movies of all time. The list of 300 titles is based on reviews from critics, as Rotten Tomatoes collects online reviews from writers who are certified members of various writing guilds or film critic-associations. These are all ‘Certified Fresh’ (100–75%) and ranked using a combination of a movie’s Tomatometer rating and its Audience Score. So, is it Titanic? Nope, not even in the Top 10. The Godfather? Close, but Francis Ford Coppola’s epic crime drama got second place on the podium. The misunderstood ma...
