“That’s the first feeling I felt. It’s a patronising arrogant feeling, feeling sorry for someone you’ve just laid eyes on but I did feel sorry for her,” Donny’s voice-over says as he describes the first time he met Martha, the woman who would go on to ruin his life. In the opening scenes of new Netflix drama ‘Baby Reindeer’, Martha turns up at Donny’s pub looking bereft and he offers her a cup of tea on the house. It’s a moment Donny will play over in his mind ad infinitum over the rest of the series. Why? Martha is a dangerous serial stalker, and Donny’s small act of kindness latches her onto...

Well, there goes another eventful week. Mona Lisa is moving, AI beauty pageants are a thing, and there's also a new Eminem album on the horizon. Yet none of these announcements could detract from what the internet really cares about right now: Challengers. Yes, Luca Guadagnino's new film, a titillating tennis-themed loved triangle starring Zendaya, is out at cinemas and serving memes (and thirst posts) left, right and centre (more on this below.) Away from all that racket, here's what else is happening around Europe to love. ExhibitionVenice biennale 2024 The 60th edition of the Venice Biennal...

Creative Scotland, the government development organisation that funds arts in Scotland, has defended its decision to not include the Fringe in its funding programme, citing its own financial woes and the “particularly precarious” state of the festival’s organisation. The Edinburgh Fringe is the largest performing arts festival in the world, taking over the Scottish capital for the entire month of August and filling venues with theatre, comedy, and dance shows among many more. The Fringe is believed to add over £200 million (€233 million) to the economy every year. In the latest round of decisi...

Another week, another round-up of exciting things to see, do and listen to this week around Europe. Obviously, the big one - for Swifties at least - is Taylor's new album, 'The Tortured Poets Department' (more on that below), but there's also a number of new exhibitions and events covering everything from AI art to embroidered tears. Another notable event is the Venice Biennale, which returns for its 60th edition and examines ideas of nationhood, belonging and foreignness under the theme 'Foreigners Everywhere.’ __\Record scratch*__* \\\- if you're reading this on 20 April, it's also [__Record...

If the centenary is an appropriate anniversary for assessing a book’s staying power, then it’s probably about time to acknowledge that Graham Greene was wrong. The "Brighton Rock" author made the rookie mistake of trying to look through the mists of time when he declared: “There is no novelist of [the 20th century] more likely to live than Ford Madox Ford.” But if, 100 years after its first volume was published in April 1924, you went searching for a copy of "Parade’s End" in your local bookshop, you might find yourself more unlucky than if you were looking for, say, a paperback of Greene’s "T...

Sacré bleu! From the nation that brought the world the ménage à trois, la petite mort and the French kiss (they just call it a kiss there), comes a new drama on Brigitte Macron. It’s been a good year for series so far... True Detective: Night Country was a significant return to form for the anthology series; 3 Body Problem had a slow burn start but yielded many rewards; and The Regime is an absurd delight. I still haven’t been able to muster the emotional fortitude to watch One Day yet, considering how David Nicholls’ novel robbed me of all eye moisture. But I’ll get around to it soon. However, there is one show that drops today on Netflix which I’m giddy about: Ripley, the new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” I’ve been a fan of...
