It’s official, Peter Jackson is returning to Middle Earth. Warner Bros Discovery announced this week that the studio is working with the director to produce a new film in the Lord of the Rings series. The film, The Hunt for Gollum, will be directed by and star Andy Serkis, whose motion-capture performance of the pitiful hobbit-turned-monster was one of the defining features of the original trilogy. Jackson is set to produce the Serkis vehicle and Warner Bros expects the film to be released in 2026. Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav has said that the film is in “the early stages of script developmen...

The Cannes Film Festival starts next week, on Tuesday (14 May), with the opening film Le Deuxième Acte from French absurdist Quentin Dupieux. However, it’s already off to a rocky start, with a French labour group representing freelance workers at film festivals calling for a strike. As if that wasn’t enough of a headache for the Croisette, speculation is mounting in the French media over rumours that a bombshell #MeToo exposé will drop on the day of the opening. Indeed, there are rumours of a mysterious list of 10 actors / directors / producers who are set to be accused of #MeToo allegations d...

Despite my dislike for films which think it’s cool to replace title letters with numbers – Se7en being the exemption to that rule – this strange looking hitman film shot in infrared with rapper Travis Scott attached to the project initially looked intriguing. Plus, AGGRO DR1FT is the first film from a new production company helmed by director Harmony Korine, the provocateur behind films like Gummo, Trash Humpers and Spring Breakers. Acquired tastes, sure, but envelope-pushing in their own ways. Then came the screening. Oh boy, the screening. It came. The kindest descriptive is that it’s an unc...

Strange thing: The recent 2011-17 films in the “Planet of the Apes” franchise, now joined by the chapter opening this week, follow a similar narrative cycle of peril, punishment, survival. And yet these these movies, spaced out in ways Marvel never learned to respect, feel just fresh enough to matter — as long as you don’t mind the adverb “grimly” in front of a word like “compelling.” “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” leaps roughly 300 years into the future, after the death of the great Caesar, rough-hewn, tender-hearted warrior leader. In the 2011-17 trilogy, Andy Serkis made this motion-ca...

Days before the premiere of his new film The Seed of the Sacred Fig in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, acclaimed Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof has been sentenced to eight years in prison and flogging in Iran for national security crimes. He’ll also be subjected to a fine and the confiscation of property. In a statement on X, Rasoulof’s lawyer Babak Paknia said the court found Rasoulof’s films and documentaries to be “examples of collusion with the intention of committing a crime against the security of the country.” The filmmaker, 52, has been a target of the authoritarian regime...

Legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert will head up the 2024 Venice Film Festival jury this year. Serving as jury president of the 81st edition, Huppert will hand out the Golden Lion and other awards when the festival on the Lido concludes. In a statement, Huppert said: “There is a long and beautiful history between the Festival and I. Becoming a privileged spectator is an honor. More than ever, cinema is a promise.

London (AFP) - Hollywood star Kevin Spacey is facing a civil trial in London over a sexual abuse claim after a judge on Tuesday set aside a previous default ruling against the actor. A man made the claim against the Oscar-winning actor at the High Court in London in 2022, alleging he was sexually assaulted and was suffering "psychiatric damage" as a result. But the case was put on hold when Spacey was then criminally charged with various sexual offences. He was later acquitted. Spacey's legal team were meant to file a written defence for the civil case once the criminal proceedings ended, but ...

Los Angeles (AFP) - It is an offer they still can't refuse: Francis Ford Coppola will lead a parade of veteran American movie titans back to the Cannes Film Festival next week in a likely swansong for the "New Hollywood" generation. The director of "The Godfather" will be joined by "Star Wars" creator George Lucas and "Taxi Driver" writer Paul Schrader on the French Riviera for the world's most famous film gathering, where all three men enjoyed success in their 1970s heyday. Half a century later, Coppola and Schrader will compete head-to-head for the festival's coveted Palme d'Or with their ne...
