San Francisco (AFP) - Google has agreed to settle a consumer privacy lawsuit seeking at least $5 billion in damages over allegations it tracked the data of users who thought they were browsing the internet privately. The object of the lawsuit was the "incognito" mode on Google's Chrome browser that the plaintiffs said gave users a false sense that what they were surfing online was not being tracked by the Silicon Valley tech firm. But internal Google emails brought forward in the lawsuit demonstrated that users using incognito mode were being followed by the search and advertising behemoth for...

Washington (AFP) - The world's most popular car brands are a data "privacy nightmare," collecting and selling personal information in an age when driving is going increasingly digital, a study showed on Wednesday. The California-based Mozilla Foundation reviewed 25 car brands and said none of them fully satisfied its standards on privacy and that no other product category had ever received as poor a review, including makers of sex toys or mental health apps. "Modern cars are a privacy nightmare" at a time when "car makers have been bragging about their cars being 'computers on wheels'", said M...

Paris (AFP) - The European Union's central data regulator said on Thursday it was forming a task force to help countries deal with wildly popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, ramping up the pressure on its US maker OpenAI. Italy temporarily banned the program last month over allegations its data-gathering broke privacy laws, and France's regulator said on Thursday it had opened a formal procedure after receiving five complaints. ChatGPT can generate essays, poems and conversations from the briefest of prompts, and has proved itself capable of passing some tough exams. But it has been dogged by concern...

Paris (AFP) - France's privacy watchdog said Thursday it has fined US tech giant Microsoft 60 million euros ($64 million) for foisting advertising cookies on users. In the largest fine imposed in 2022, the National Commission for Technology and Freedoms (CNIL) said Microsoft's search engine Bing had not set up a system allowing users to refuse cookies as simply as accepting them. The French regulator said that after investigations it found that "when users visited this site, cookies were deposited on their terminal without their consent, while these cookies were used, among others, for adverti...

The action by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) follows a joint investigation with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. Clearview AI Inc has a database of more than 20 billio...

Dublin (AFP) - Ireland's data regulator has launched an official inquiry into Facebook after details on 533 million users were leaked on a hacking website, a spokesman said Wednesday. The Data Protection Commission (DPC) said the probe was launched to determine whether the EU-wide GDPR charter on data rights and the corresponding Irish legislation had been -- or is being -- infringed by Facebook. The US tech giant said it is "cooperating fully" with the regulator's enquiry, which it added "relates to features that make it easier for people to find and connect with friends on our services". "T...
