Germany's Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck has warned in strong terms of the uncontrollable momentum of global warming. "We may be on the verge of global warming, in this case the warming of the oceans, actually getting out of control," the Green politician said on Tuesday in Berlin at an international energy transition conference. The temperature in the world's oceans has been at record levels for around a year now. "There will be storms, winds and hurricane floods that we will find difficult to control," warned Habeck. "That worries me deeply." Habeck said that in addition to dealin...

A target agreed at the UN Climate Conference in Dubai last year to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030 will require major additional effort, according to a report presented by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Berlin on Tuesday. On average, almost 1,100 gigawatts in additional capacity will have to be installed every year, or more than double the 473 GW installed last year, IRENA, which has UN observer status, said. Annual investments to the amount of $1.55 trillion are needed. The agency called for improvements to infrastructure - including distribution grids and stora...

Renewable forms of energy contributed 22% to Germany's overall energy mix in 2023, up from 20.8% the year before, the Federal Environmental Agency reported in Berlin on Friday. The figure, which covers electricity generation, heating and transport, was a "positive development," the agency said. It attributed the rise to increases in electricity and heat generation from renewables, accompanied by declining demand for energy in all sectors. Electricity generation from renewables rose 7% to a record 272.4 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2023. A decline in overall consumption led to a record 51.8% share c...

Emissions from the energy sector in the European Union fell sharper in 2023 than ever before, according to a new report from Ember published on Wednesday. "Fossil fuels are playing a smaller role than ever as a system with wind and solar as its backbone comes into view," said Sarah Brown, an expert with the climate and energy think tank. According to a report, the 19% drop in emissions is partly due to major reductions in electricity generation from coal and gas - falling 26% and 15% respectively. Ember reported that fossil fuels now account for less than a third of the EU's electricity genera...
