Feeling pressure to lose weight as a teenager may have "long-lasting effects" on how a person perceives themselves as an adult, according to a new study. Adults who were bullied as a teen or those who felt pressure to lose weight from family or the media had the highest risk of "internalised weight stigma," according to new findings from a long-term study. Researchers said that women, people in sexual minorities and deprived adults were also at higher risk. Internalised weight stigma is when people apply negative obesity-related stereotypes to themselves, such as thinking they are less attract...

Spending a lot of time on social media could increase the chances of teenagers taking up smoking or vaping, according to a study. The findings advocate for the promotion of healthy online habits for young people, researchers said, rather than "blanket bans and over-protection." Academics from the University of Glasgow explored how social media use among 14-year-olds influenced nicotine use when they reached 17. The team surveyed 8,987 teenagers for the study, which has been published in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research. Some 28.9% of those who responded were smokers, while 23.7% vaped. ...

Minneapolis (AFP) - With bills targeting transgender youth multiplying at an alarming rate, Mary knew it was time to leave Texas -- and fast. So she looked for places she could raise her child safely, and landed on the northern US state of Minnesota, clear across the country. "The idea that the state (of Texas) would betray us that way, I still can't really wrap my head around that," said Mary, sitting in a Minneapolis park with her 16-year-old child Jasper on an unusually warm April day. "I feel like this is much, much safer," Mary added. Minnesota public officials have pointedly worked to m...

San Francisco (AFP) - US teens have left Facebook in droves over the past seven years, preferring to spend time at video-sharing venues YouTube and TikTok, according to a Pew Research Center survey data out Wednesday. TikTok has "emerged as a top social media platform for US teens" while Google-run YouTube "stands out as the most common platform used by teens," the report's authors wrote. Pew's data comes as Facebook-owner Meta is in a battle with TikTok for social media primacy, trying to keep the maximum number of users as part of its multi-billion dollar ad-driven business. The report said ...

Santa Teresa (United States) (AFP) - A few months after they began dating, 17-year-old "M" discovered she and her 19-year-old boyfriend were pregnant. There was never any doubt about what they needed to do: "We didn't want a child," she said. With a green light for an abortion in their conservative home state of Texas unlikely, a nine-hour overnight drive to New Mexico was their only practical option. The couple, who live in San Antonio and requested anonymity because of the political controversy surrounding the procedure, began dating just a month before Texas adopted one of the most restrict...

Arlington (United States) (AFP) - When his father lost his job last year, Togi, then 16, wasted little time before looking for work to support his family, even though he knew it could put him at risk of contracting Covid-19. He ended up working at a fast food restaurant in a suburb of Washington, juggling the job with online classes as the world's largest Covid-19 outbreak tore through the United States. "It's exhausting," Togi said, describing long days spent between school and work, leaving little time for the teenager to socialize. The twin health and economic crises caused by the pandemic ...

Montreal (AFP) - Pornography website Pornhub on Tuesday outlined measures against illegal content on its platform after the New York Times reported finding videos depicting child sex abuse and rape on the site. The paper asserted that among the 6.8 million new videos posted on the site each year, a majority "probably involve consenting adults, but many depict child abuse and nonconsensual violence." Pornhub, the Times said, also lets users download videos directly from its site, which allows anyone to repost clips repeatedly and without limit. "Today, we are taking major steps to further pro...
