The Netherlands' Farmer-Citizen Movement – BoerBurgerBeweging (BBB) – has become the first activist farmers' political group to break into government after striking an agreement with three other parties to form a right-wing government on Thursday (16 May). In a statement, party leader Caroline Van der Plas said that the party had "played a major role" in brokering the deal "with our attitude". Born after the 2019 farmers’ protest against the then government's plans to radically curb agriculture emissions, the inclusion of BBB in the forthcoming executive will imply a change of tack in the coun...

The Netherlands' data watchdog recommended that the government not use Facebook to communicate with the public if it is unclear what happens to users' personal data.

The Netherlands has officially stopped drilling at the Europe's largest gas field in Groningen, marking the occasion with a symbolic ceremony on Friday. The occasion took place at the same spot where the deposit was reportedly discovered in 1959. Since the early 1960s, the field has been a major contributor to the country's economy and it still has huge reserves of gas. But over the years it has become clear the drilling has caused a spike in seismic activity. The problem became acute in the 2010s. In 2012, Groningen was hit with a 3.6 magnitude earthquake: the strongest in the history of the ...
