Renewable energy production is rapidly increasing all over Greece. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his conservative government have pledged to accelerate clean energy technologies to cover 80 per cent of the country's total energy production by 2030. At present the level is less than 30 per cent. Ágios Geórgios, a weather-beaten rock in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Athens, boasts 23 wind turbines which generate enough electricity to power more than 40,000 households back on the mainland. The government has announced plans to build an additional 1,150 turbines on Greek islands...

“I'm building something with purpose and I even get goosebumps when I share it with you,” says solar entrepreneur Wouter Draijer. Born in New York and raised in Amsterdam, the 29-year-old is CEO and co-founder of SolarMente - a company aiming to change the way people consume and distribute energy in Spain. Its subscription service allows homeowners and businesses to install solar panels with no upfront cost - a model that has attracted investment from Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio and US technology startup accelerator Y Combinator. Euronews Green spoke to Wouter about his company’s mission ...

The 'lithium triangle' - spanning Argentina, Chile and Bolivia - is home to the largest reserve of lithium anywhere on Earth. This metal is key in the transition to net zero, used in electric car batteries, crucial to solar and wind energy and much more. But to extract it, mines suck water out of the white salt flats that cover this land. Land that has sustained thousands of Indigenous communities that have lived within here since before Elon Musk was but a glint in his mother's eye. As the world’s most powerful increasingly look to the triangle as a crucial puzzle piece in their plans, many w...

Europe's solar industry warns it faces an "existential threat" and that unless action is taken soon, it could collapse in a matter of months. An industry group is calling on the European Commission to introduce emergency measures, for example by stocking up on solar panels to ensure liquidity. They say the influx of China-made solar panels, whose price is artificially lowered through generous state aid, into the EU market is to blame for the critical situation. According to the industry, Beijing has a near monopoly in the field: "China has been subsidising its industry for more than a decade,"...

Renewable heating and combined solutions using solar thermal with heat pumps, geothermal or solar PVs, are largely missing from the strategy for reaching a target of 90% net carbon emissions reductions by 2040, renewables’ representatives said in reaction to Tuesday’s (6 February) announcement by the European Commission. Bioenergy Europe, Solar Heat Europe, and the Voice of Geothermal in Europe (EGEC) voiced broad support for the target during a briefing, but said reliance on use of heat pumps alone - as promoted in the EU executive’s proposal - would be a “major mistake". Solar Heat Europe cl...

More of Europe’s electricity came from wind power than fossil gas for the first time ever last year. That’s according to the latest annual review from clean energy think tank Ember, which is peppered with positive statistics about the EU’s energy transition. Wind and solar produced a record 27 per cent of the bloc’s electricity in 2023 - above a quarter for the first time. Coal and gas took a corresponding nosedive, with the former falling to its lowest ever level at just 12 per cent of the EU’s electricity generation. “The EU’s power sector is in the middle of a monumental shift,” says Sarah ...
