New York (AFP) - US long jumper Bob Beamon parted with the Olympic gold medal he won at the 1968 Mexico City summer games leaping 29 feet -- the standing Olympic record -- for $441,000 on Thursday. "It's time for me to pass it on," the 77-year-old told AFP, ahead of the award's auction by Christie's on Thursday in New York. Beamon's historic leap -- technically at 8.9 meters, or 29 feet and 2 1/4 inches -- shattered the previous record by nearly 22 inches. It remained a world record until the 1991 Tokyo World Championships, and still stands as the top Olympic jump. Amid a growing sports memora...

New York (AFP) - Half a century after his 29-foot long jump at the 1968 Mexico City Summer Olympics, Bob Beamon's record still stands -- though he is ready to part with his gold medal. Amid a growing sports memorabilia market,...

New York (AFP) - Basketball legend Michael Jordan will sell his majority stake in the NBA's Charlotte Hornets to an investment consortium, the team announced Friday. The buyer group is led by Gabe Plotkin, chief investment officer at Tallwoods Capital LLC and Rick Schnall, co-president of private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. The star player, often known as "MJ," will retain a minority stake in the franchise, the team said. The trans...

Washington (AFP) - US lawmakers heard proposals Wednesday for a new national standard regulating how college athletes are paid for their image rights -- one of the most polarizing issues in the sporting landscape. College sports are hugely popular in the United States, with basketball and American football teams playing in packed stadiums and garnering national headlines as well as primetime TV coverage. For a century, the athletes whose performances drove the money-spinning industry were held to strict standards of amateurism -- forbidden from being paid to play or earn money from promotional...

Washington (AFP) - A transgender child's desire to join her school's female running team could be decided by the US Supreme Court after West Virginia on Friday asked the high court to rule on the controversial case. The court was asked to overturn a lower appeals court decision that freezed West Virginia's 2021 law banning Becky Pepper-Jackson and others like her from competing with other girls because she was born a biological male. It could lead to the Supreme Court's first-ever intervention in the hot-button issue of trans girls and women in sports. Backed by the American Civil Liberties Un...

Frankfurt (Germany) (AFP) - Adidas said Thursday it was investigating claims against Kanye West after a report detailed alleged inappropriate behaviour, just weeks after the German sportswear giant ended its partnership with the rapper. US magazine Rolling Stone reported claims that the rapper played pornography to Adidas staff in meetings, and discussed porn and showed an intimate photo of ex-wife Kim Kardashian in job interviews. It said former members of the team involved in "Yeezy" -- the product line designed with the rapper -- had released a letter alleging Adidas executives were aware o...

Berlin (AFP) - German sportswear giant Adidas said Tuesday it was ending its partnership with Kanye West after a series of anti-Semitic outbursts by the controversial rapper. Recent comments by West -- now known formally as Ye -- were "unacceptable, hateful and dangerous", Adidas said in a statement. "After a thorough review, the company has taken the decision to terminate the partnership with Ye immediately". Adidas said it would "end production" of the highly successful "Yeezy" line designed together with West and "stop all payments to Ye and his companies". The abrupt end to the collaborat...

New York (AFP) - Africa offers a vast underdeveloped market for global sports, with thousands of athletes ready to join international ranks if only there were major investment, industry leaders and stars say. But more government and private-sector partnerships are needed to turbo-charge African sports and bring young players into top-tier leagues of football, basketball and even American football, participants at a business forum said Monday. In the event on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, NBA commissioner Adam Silver hailed Africa as bursting with sporting po...

Paris (AFP) - American gymnastics superstar Simone Biles's legacy may not be the four Olympic gold medals she won in her career but a remarkable meltdown at the Tokyo Olympics which sparked other sports greats to speak out about their battle with mental health issues. Biles's attack of the twisties -- a condition meaning gymnasts lose the ability to orientate themselves in mid-air -- is perhaps the most abiding image of the Games. Since then, retired French football icon Thierry Henry and Irish rugby great Keith Earls have spoken frankly about their problems. Biles's travails followed Japan's ...
