Italy’s Senate has passed legislation which allows regions to permit groups “with a qualified experience supporting motherhood” to have access to women considering abortions at public clinics. For the right-wing government, the amendment fulfils the original intent of the 1978 law legalising abortion, known as Law 194, which includes provisions to prevent the procedure and support motherhood. But some in the medical profession have questioned the wisdom of allowing medically unqualified, anti-abortion groups access to women considering the procedure. “Then you don't understand how you want to ...

Arizona's Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that officials can enforce a 160-year-old law banning abortions. The US state joins 14 others that have banned abortion since the 2022 overturning of Roe v Wade, a court case that guaranteed access to abortion in the US. Arizona's 1864 law bans abortions except if it is "necessary to save" a woman's life, providing no exceptions for rape or incest. The law predates Arizona's statehood. The state's Supreme Court said enforcement won't begin for at least two weeks, but it could be up to two months. The number of abortions in the state is expected to drop ...

Donald Trump said abortion limits should be left to the US states in a video released on Monday. The former US president who is once again running for office declined to endorse a national ban after months of mixed messages and speculation. “My view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both," Trump said in a video posted on his Truth Social site. "And whatever they decide must be the law of the land — in this case, the law of the state". Trump's endorsement of the patchwork approach leaves hi...

French lawmakers are gathering in Versailles on Monday for a historic vote to add an article guaranteeing the right to have an abortion in the country's Constitution. The symbolic vote needs three-fifths of both chambers of parliament to agree to make the change official and is expected to pass as both MPs and Senators have agreed on the legislative text. France's Senate voted last week to approve the government's proposed law while the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, voted to approve the proposed Constitutional change in January. Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the National A...

Additional in vitro fertilization (IVF) providers in Alabama paused services on Thursday, sending patients scrambling to make other plans in the wake of a state Supreme Court ruling that said frozen embryos could be considered children under state law. Doctors and patients have been grappling with shock and fear this week as they try to determine what they can and can’t do after the ruling by the all-Republican Alabama Supreme Court. Three clinics have announced pauses on services while another facility assured patients that IVF treatment could continue. State legislators also began looking fo...

Abortion measures are hitting the ballots following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in June, which effectively ended the federal protection of abortion rights and allowed states to make their own laws regarding abortion. Fifty-four percent of Americans said they would vote to allow abortion in their states, according to an August 10 Ipsos poll that surveyed people who identify with both major parties. Abortion-rights advocates look at Kansas in hope that states will vote to implement some sort of abortion access. Earlier this month, Kansas provided the first vote on abortion law...

A Florida appeals court kept in place a previous ruling denying a 16-year-old an abortion, citing a lack of “maturity” to make that decision. The girl, referred to as Jane Doe 22-B, requested 10 weeks into her pregnancy for accommodation to the state law that requires individuals under 18 to gain parental consent before having an abortion. A circuit judge had said she could not get an abortion without parental approval, even though the teen is parentless, according to court documents. Doe does, however, have a guardian who had said they would allow her to terminate her pregnancy. The teen wrot...

Indiana became the first state to pass an abortion ban following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. “Following the overturning of Roe, I stated clearly that I would be willing to support legislation that made progress in protecting life,” Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) said in a statement. “In my view, [the bill] accomplishes this goal following its passage in both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly with a solid majority of support. These actions followed long days of hearings filled with sobering and personal testimony from citizens and elected representatives on this emotiona...

Louisiana’s heavily restrictive abortion laws fell back into place this week, following the Supreme Court’s June decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and return the power to the states to determine how they will approach women’s reproductive health. Temporary restraining orders and different court rulings had allowed abortion providers to keep operating since the Supreme Court’s ruling until a court decided Friday to allow state Attorney Gen. Jeff Landry (R) to enforce abortion laws as challenges are being deliberated in the courts. Doctors rushed to inform patients with procedures scheduled that ...

Michigan Republican gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon said that there would be no case, unless it were to protect the mother’s life, in which she thinks an abortion should be allowed. When asked by No BS Newshour host Charlie LeDuff what her opinion would be if given the example of a 14-year-old girl who is the victim of abuse by her uncle, she responded, “Yeah, perfect example… I know people who are the product. A life is a life for me. That’s how it is.” Dixon won the Republican primary on Tuesday in overwhelming fashion with 80 of Michigan’s 83 counties voting for her. She was boosted by ...
