As a dual-nationality family with a second home in Jura, France, we’ve seen our share of LeShuttle delays. The infamous day in 2019 when extreme heat caused a meltdown, and class war almost broke out in the car park. The queues backed up onto the M20 at half terms. The time we had to jump ship, and go on the ferry. So it was with some horror that I learned of the EES - the European Entry/Exit System - which will be introduced in October this year. Brexit has already increased travel times due to the need to get passports stamped. The EES will replace that system, and require Brits to have data...

High-level political discussions aimed at closing a deal on post-Brexit border and transit arrangements for Gibraltar ended without an agreement in Brussels on Thursday. The self-governing British overseas territory ceased to be part of the EU with the UK’s formal exit from the bloc in 2020, but it was excluded from the Trade and Cooperation Agreement that defined the post-Brexit EU-UK relationship. Thursday's meeting between Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron and European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šef...

Ireland's government has moved to remove tents occupied by asylum seekers in Dublin. After many weeks of concern about their conditions, the area around the International Protection office in the Irish capital was cleared. The move however simply saw asylum seekers move 200 metres down the road to a nearby canal due to a scarcity of accommodation. Ireland has recently seen an influx of people seeking international protection from the UK, with asylum seekers coming across the open border with Northern Ireland. London's controversial plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda has caused some to fle...

E-gates at airports across the UK have returned to normal following a mass outage which caused disruption and huge queues for thousands of passengers. On Tuesday, the electronic gates Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol airports stopped working, delaying passengers who were trying to cross the UK border. The British Home Office has ruled out a cyberattack as the cause. They say the widespread delays were down to a nationwide technical outage. "As soon as engineers detected a wider system network issue at 19:44 pm last night, a large-scale contingency resp...

The UK government is preparing for chaos ahead of the launch of the EU’s Entry-Exit system (EES). The incoming EU border scheme, set to be in place from 6 October, is expected to cause delays at the Port of Dover, south east England. Guy Opperman, a minister in the UK’s transport department, has now explained the scheme will have a “six-month soft launch” to make the process more simple. Speaking at the House of Commons’ European Scrutiny Committee, Opperman said the plan will enable a “greater freedom of passage of vehicles” if queues build due to the EES. The scheme will see travellers from ...

The EU's post-Brexit Entry-Exit System (EES) was originally supposed to launch in 2022, then was rescheduled for May 2023 before being pushed back even further to the end of last year. Despite continuous setbacks, it’s finally set to launch this autumn. But a significant chunk of UK adults say they have no idea about how the EES will work. Luckily for those puzzled about the new system, ABTA - The Travel Association - has laid bare exactly how the EES will look in practice. Here’s what to expect. What exactly is the EU Entry/Exit system?Put simply, the EES is a new electronic system which will...

Almost two thirds of UK adults are unaware of the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) which is scheduled to launch later this year. That staggering statistic comes from findings by Co-op Insurance. The research has also found that more than one in five UK adults admit they would be ‘put off’ travelling to Europe as a result of the new system. EES will require fingerprints and facial scans to be taken from UK travellers heading to EU countries. It’s set to begin in October, just six months away, and 66 per cent of people have no idea about its implementation, while 22 per cent will likely refuse t...

The European Commission proposed on Thursday to start negotiations with the United Kingdom to allow young people to move freely, work and study in both regions after Brexit. According to the EU, the withdrawal of the UK from the EU following a referendum in 2016 has damaged mobility between the two areas. “This situation has particularly affected the opportunities for young people to experience life on the other side of the Channel and to benefit from youth, cultural, educational, research and training exchanges,” the Commission said. When the UK was still a member of the economic and politica...

The European Commission has requested talks with the UK government after London decided to shut down industrial sand eel fishing on environmental grounds, while in Brussels marine conservationists have launched a campaign demanding the EU ban destructive bottom trawling in its own marine protected areas. The UK government and its devolved Scottish counterpart both announced the end of industrial sand eel fishing at the end of January. Today (16 April) the European Commission said it was triggering the dispute settlement mechanism in the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA). Unless a sat...

Getting the right to live and work in another country can be a long and difficult process. But that’s not always the case for those with money to spend. Golden visas offer the opportunity for wealthy people to essentially ‘buy’ the right to residency - sometimes without even having to live in the country. And their popularity in the European Union is growing as people look to move away from political decisions such as Brexit that may limit their rights. With the unsettled political and social environment in the US in recent years, applications for golden visas from Americans were also projecte...
