The US government proposed a rule change to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug. The historic move would recognise its use medically in the US and acknowledge it has less potential for abuse than other drugs. The US Attorney General submitted a proposal on Thursday to move it from a schedule I to a schedule III drug under the US Controlled Substances Act (CSA). German MPs approve new cannabis law allowing limited possession and cultivation of marijuanaSchedule I drugs are those "with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse" such as heroin and LSD, while sched...

More than half of 15-year-old teens have tried alcohol at least once and one in four has smoked a cigarette, new data from the World Health Organization (WHO) shows. Moreover, one in five has smoked an e-cigarette in the past 30 days, according to a survey of nearly 280,000 teenagers, both male and female in Europe, Central Asia and Canada. When Paula Motta discovered medical cannabis in 2017, it was still illegal in Portugal. Her 10-year-old daughter suffered epileptic episodes up to four times a day - some lasting 20 minutes - while the 16 daily pills she was taking were ineffective against her Dravet syndrome. Motta decided to give her daughter drops of cannabis extract, and over time, the girl’s crises became less frequent. The teenager continues to take two pills along with two drops of cannabis - one in the morning and one in the evening - and episodes only occur “every fifteen days, for about two minutes”. “Medical cannabi...

Researchers are investigating whether a cannabis extract could someday be used to treat skin cancer. Their recent study suggests there is potential in using a cannabinoid-derived extract to disrupt the growth of melanoma cancer cells. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that is often treated with invasive medical procedures such as surgery or radiation therapy. Researchers at Australia’s Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) discovered a specific cannabis extract called cannabinoid PHEC-66 worked by effectively manipulating cancerous cells into ki...

Germany has long been known as one of the most conservative countries in Europe, but that perception could be shifting. This week, it became the largest EU country to legalise recreational cannabis - despite fierce opposition from politicians and various medical associations. Those over 18 are now allowed to carry 25 grams of dried cannabis as well as cultivating up to three marijuana plants at home. The change means Germany now has some of the most liberal cannabis laws in Europe, similar to those in Malta and Luxembourg. Those nations legalised recreational use in 2021 and 2023, respectively...

Germany has partially legalised the possession of marijuana with new legislation taking effect on April 1. Public possession of 25g of cannabis is decriminalised and people will be allowed to possess up to 50g of cannabis at home and cultivate three plants. The new law, however, bans advertising for marijuana and prohibits consumption by minors or in front of minors. Smoking will also be banned within 200 metres of schools, playgrounds, and sports fields. Smoking marijuana in "pedestrian zones" between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm is also prohibited. From July, the law allows for non-commercial cannabi...

German lawmakers are set to debate and vote on legislation that would make cannabis legal for personal use in the country. The new law would allow the possession of 50g of cannabis for private consumption and growing up to three plants. In public, adults would be allowed to have up to 25g of cannabis. The draft law would also allow for non-commercial cultivation and the controlled distribution of the drug by cannabis clubs. The legislation would give Germany some of the most lenient marijuana laws in Europe, where the drug is still illegal in most countries. Adults in Malta may carry up to 7g ...
